OCR

OCR -- Optical character recognition -- is the ability to take an image of text and turn it into editable text. I.E. you receive a PDF where the author has scanned a document into an image (usually jpg or gif) and you need to edit the document without buying $100+ software to do it. Here is a sweet trick I found!

1) Print out PDF

2) Scan pages – save as tif (NOT jpg)
OR if you have a Photoshop type program you can copy the image and
re-save as a tif. The image MUST be a tif!

3) Open Microsoft Office Document Imaging

4) Open image to be OCR

5) In the menu tool bar: Tools > Send Text to Word

6) Format, edit in Word as normal doc

I will check out Open Office, Write to see if they offer OCR or continue to search for an OpenSource program.
